Applying Classroom Learning to Real World Problems
Wednesday, March 2, 2005
Gateway facilitator: Ivan Markov, School of Architecture
Guest Presenter: Deborah Allen, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, University of Delaware
In problem-based learning (PBL), problems are used to motivate contextual
learning on a need-to-know basis, rather than as checks of understanding following delivery of
content by lecture or other means. Students in small groups work towards problem resolution by
asking and answering their own and peers questions, using their collective skill at acquiring,
analyzing, and communicating information. Participants will have the opportunity to experience PBL
first hand, then share ideas about the potential rewards and drawbacks for transforming
undergraduate courses to incorporate PBL.
