Topic: What Motivates Students? What Interests Students?
Wednesday, September 21, 2005
Gateway facilitator: Marvin Druger, Arts & Sciences
What Motivates Students? What Interests Students? “If students study
only because they want to get a good grade or be the best in the class, they do not achieve as much
as they do when they learn because they are interested.”1 In this session, three faculty
members will discuss their ideas for motivating students, followed by a general discussion.

Topic: Technology to Support Student Motivation
Thursday, October 20, 2005
Gateway facilitator: Sam Clemence, L.C. Smith College of Engineering & Computer Science
In considering how technology may support student motivation, one must
consider “the need to adapt technology to learners, rather than to adapt learners to technology.”*
In this session, we will learn about some interesting technologies used for teaching, about campus
resources for teaching students research skills, and how blogs can be used as a motivational tool.

Topic: Bringing Aspects of Faculty Research into Undergraduate Classes
Wednesday, November 16, 2005
Gateway facilitator: Jerry Evensky, Arts & Sciences
Faculty often feel conflicted between the amount of time they want to
spend on research and the time they need to prepare for their classes. But it’s also important for
undergraduates to understand what kind of research their professors are doing. This session will
feature several professors from a variety of disciplines who will discuss how they bring aspects of
their research into the classroom.
