Teaching at SU
Diversity
Diversity is one of Syracuse University’s five core values and a
focus of many institutional initiatives, events, programs, and centers. Campus resources are
available to support faculty and students. CSTL consultants are available to discuss
strategies for engaging students in inclusive ways—in terms of perspective and pedagogy as
well as course design. This site includes links to diversity resources related to teaching
and learning.

Interrupting Heteronormativity (PDF)
Initially written as a guide for SU Teaching Assistants, Interrupting Heteronormativity is an
on-line resource that asks faculty to consider how their course texts, classroom practices, or
teaching pedagogy may exclude students who do not fit neatly into male-female categories and roles.
The various chapters include student voices describing experiences of exclusion as well as ideas and
suggestions about creating inclusive assignments, activities, and approaches.
