Subcommittee On Learning Outside
The Classroom

Committee Goals and Objectives

Vice Chancellor Vincow suggested in his February 26, 1997 address to the Faculty: "Since our overall goal is the enhancement of holistic student learning and personal development, assessment will help break down traditional barriers between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs. Better mutual understanding is achieved, with each division increasingly directing its efforts in support of the other, toward a commonly defined goal."

The charge for our subcommittee will be to assemble a group of faculty, Student Affairs staff and students to discuss the intended learning outcomes of the Personal and Professional development of the individual outside of the classroom. We will begin our task through the following steps:

  1. Step 1: To provide a better understanding of the goals/mission of the four participating Student Affairs units (Career Services, Greek Life, Judicial Affairs, Residence Life), each will provide a brief overview to the committee the current mission of these units and also some programs and services currently offered. (Some of the committee members may have a limited perspective of the role and activities the units currently provide.)
  2. Step 2: A series of questions will be generated by the committee to assist in identifying how each unit might assist in the formulation of student's personal and professional development. Some of the questions to be asked may include:
    • By participating in the services and programs that our units provide, what do we hope that students will gain?
    • How will students be changed through these experiences?
    • What lasting value will be gained through their participation?
The intent is to engage the subcommittee in conversations about our hopes and aspirations through the opportunities offered by programs and services of the four units.
  3. Step 3: At the conclusion of our conversations, it is hoped that the subcommittee will create and disseminate a meaningful set of values and outcomes for personal and professional development outside of the classroom. By utilizing the four units in Student Affairs we will have the opportunity to identify common or disparate values/goals/outcomes/results for our students. The set of values and outcomes, "results," may help the Student Affairs units to be more intentional in defining programs and services for students.
