SUBCOMMITTEE ON COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS MEETING
NOTES

September 23, 1998

In attendance: B. Adam, R. Cavanagh, S. Chin, D. Miller, G. Spencer, F. Wilbur

The group began by discussing groups with whom we need to speak. The deans were identified and the group agreed that a small number of group members might speak with the Deans' Cabinet. Ron Cavanagh suggested that we begin talking with the deans' at the degree level and let them work down to the department level if desirable and appropriate. Frank Wilbur noted that it is important to start with the deans so that we can see their commitment and understand how they plan to proceed. Shiu-Kai noted that the deans should set the standard for what's expected institution-wide.

Shiu-Kai made the point that we have the opportunity to ask questions. That's part of our sub-committee's work, so whom and what do we want to ask?

The group agreed that speaking with faculty in the School of Management was a good idea since they had wanted to meet with us late last semester. We agreed to contact Dean Burman to set this community conversation up.

We also discussed meeting with the School of Education. No decision was made about this possibility.

David Miller discussed the Tolley Forum scheduled for December 2 at the Sheraton. This gathering attracts both first-year and senior faculty and the topic will be The Effects of Time and Pedagogy on Identifying Learning Outcomes/assessment. David suggested that the sub-committee might be present to observe the faculty discussion. The group agreed that this was a good idea.

We engaged in a discussion around the problems of pre-requisites and questions about how we measure course, program, and degree competence. We tired ourselves out on this one and agreed that Shiu-Kai would re-convene the sub-committee early in October.
