SOM 122 is the Gateway Course for the School of Management. Taught in the fall semester only, it is required for all incoming freshmen. The primary objectives of the course are: first, to learn about various management areas and business themes that contribute to a business organization and how they relate to one another; and, second, to develop written and oral communication, teamwork, computer, and research skills. The secondary objectives are: to provide support for students in their transition to the University community; to develop students' understanding of what the School of Management expects of them academically, personally, and professionally; to introduce students to resources that will be helpful to them throughout their college career; and to establish a relationship with the faculty member who will be the student's academic advisor. The outcomes the objectives are intended to promote are that students: understand the current art and science of management; be aware of the kinds of issues that confront managers in a dynamic environment; recognize management's role in maintaining an ethical, productive, and socially responsible business culture; have improved their ability to use technology to locate and communicate information; have improved their teamwork and communication skills; be familiar with some of the academic and human resources available to them at the School of Management and Syracuse University.
