Teaching Support

The Center for Support of Teaching and Learning works to promote a campus climate that celebrates teaching excellence and encourages faculty to engage in the scholarship of teaching. Staffed with a team of teachers and researchers, CSTL plans events and activities and provides resources to support faculty professional development at all career stages.

Services, Resources, and Events
CSTL provides services and resources and sponsors events related to teaching.

  • Services include consultation, which is described below, as well as test scoring and the design, processing, and reporting of course evaluation/student ratings.
  • Resources include books, journals, videotapes and dvds reflecting current research from education, psychology, and other learning disciplines. To help faculty access materials on an as-needed basis, many resources are available online. Others are accessible in our Resource Room at 400 Ostrom Avenue.
  • Events and activities sponsored by the Center are planned around current topics in higher education as well as areas of interest to Syracuse faculty and staff. All faculty and teaching assistants are welcome to attend Center activities. Notice of events is communicated through campus mail, e-mail, and via this website.

Consultation
Consultation is a key service provided to SU faculty and staff. CSTL consultants are available to meet with individuals or groups of faculty to address their teaching-related questions or concerns. Consultants work with faculty clients as partners, helping them to explore issues and consider a variety of pedagogical possibilities. There are no fees associated with consultation services. Consulting is voluntary and confidential.

Consultants can help to plan class activities, observe classes and offer confidential feedback, discuss alternative teaching strategies, or confer about assessment of student learning. Consultants are also available to assist with preparation of teaching portfolios, grant proposals, or other materials for review. Making presentations to departments or groups is another service option.
