Solutions to Practice #1
For each collection of symbols below, determine if it is an
algebraic term, expression, equation, or none of these. Explain
your answer.
- 7 ÷ x
None of these It is not clear what ÷ means
between 7 and x.
- a + b c
Expression It is an expression since it means to
add b to a and to subtract c from that sum.
- 24 = 3a + 9b
Equation Here we have two expressions set equal
to one another. Note that one of those expressions is an integer.
- 3x
Term This is a product of a constant and variable.
- 24x2y + 5z = 12ac
Equation Here we have two expressions set equal
to one another. One of those expressions is a single term, 12ac.
- 156xwz
Term This is the product of a number, 156,
and several variables, x, w, and z.
