Solutions to Practice #2
For each collection of symbols below, determine if it is an
algebraic term, expression, equation, or none of these. Explain
your answer.
- 7.5xy
Term This is a product of a constant, 7.5, and
the variables x and y.
- 19p + 20q
Expression Here we have the addition of two terms,
19p and 20q.
- ½ xy
Term this is a product of a constant, ½,
and the variables x and y.
- ½ xy = q
Equation This is two expressions set equal to one
another. Each expression consists of a single term.
- 10xy = 15x4y 9
Equation Here we have two expressions set equal
to one another. The expression on the left side of the equation
is a single term, 10xy. The expression on the right side
of the equation contains two terms, 15x4y
and 9.
- 10 + k 10q ¸
12
Expression This expression contains 4 terms, 10,
k, 10q, and 12. The operations of addition,
subtraction, and division are present in this expression.
