For each collection of symbols below, determine if it is an algebraic term, expression, equation, or none of these. Explain your answer.

  1. 7.5xy
    Term This is a product of a constant, 7.5, and the variables x and y.
  2. 19p + 20q
    Expression Here we have the addition of two terms, 19p and 20q.
  3. ½ xy
    Term this is a product of a constant, ½, and the variables x and y.
  4. ½ xy = q
    Equation This is two expressions set equal to one another. Each expression consists of a single term.
  5. 10xy = 15x4y – 9
    Equation Here we have two expressions set equal to one another. The expression on the left side of the equation is a single term, 10xy. The expression on the right side of the equation contains two terms, 15x4y and – 9.
  6. –10 + k – 10q ¸ 12
    Expression This expression contains 4 terms, –10, k, – 10q, and 12. The operations of addition, subtraction, and division are present in this expression.
