If you had difficulty with any of the items in this practice, read the detailed solutions given on this page. You can either scroll through all the solutions or select the specific one you wish to view.

Given the decimal below, round it to the specified places:

0.23456
Let's first look at this number in the chart. This will help us recall the places and determine if we need to round up or round down.

I want to view the detialed solution to (click on the one you want to view):

Go to Item 1  Go to Item 2  Go to Item 3

Item 1: To the tenths place. Round down to 0.2

Since we wish to round 0.23456 off to the tenths place, we need to look at the digit in the hundredths place. This digit is a 3.

Since this digit is less than 5, we round down, meaning we drop off the end leaving only the tenths place. This leaves us with 0.2.

Item 2: To the hundredths place. Round down to 0.23

Since we wish to round 0.23456 off to the hundredths place, we need to look at the digit in the thousandths place. This digit is a 4.

Since this digit is less than 5, we round down, meaning we drop off the end leaving only the tenths and hundredths place. This leaves us with 0.23.

Item 3: To the thousandths place. Round up to 0.235

Since we wish to round 0.23456 off to the thousandths place, we need to look at the digit in the ten thousandths place. This digit is a 5.

Since the digit is 5 or greater, we round up. This means we increase the digit in the thousandths place by one, from 4 to 5, giving us 0.235.
