Private Investment Expenditures
by the G-7 Nations in 1992

 Item1: Approximately what fraction of the total spending occurred in Japan?

 return to top

The percent of the spending by Japan was 34%, which, as a decimal, is .34. Converting this decimal to a fraction yields 34/100. This can be estimated as 1/3. (If you do not know how to convert between percents, decimals, and fractions, you should review Book II of this series.)

 Item 2: Given that the total investment spending is 3.115 trillion dollars, approximately how much of that was spent by the U.S.? Round to the nearest hundredth.

 return to top

The amount spent in the U.S. is found by taking 30% of the total spending, which was given as 3.115 trillion. To do this we multiply 3.115 by .30. You may leave trillion as a label instead of adding zeros to the decimal. The total spending is much more manageable when written as 3.115 trillion rather than 3,115,000,000,000. (NOTE: If you do not understand this conversion, you should review the Decimals Unit in Book II of this series.)

3.115 x 0.30 = 0.93450

If we round this to the nearest hundredth, the answer is .93 trillion dollars. You may leave your answer as .93 trillion or you can express it as 930 billion.

 Item 3: The investment spending in the U.S. is approximately how many times greater than the investment spending in the UK? Report your answer as a whole number.

 return to top

The percent spent by the U.S. is 30% and the percent spent by the UK is 5%. If you set up a ratio of the percents, you get:

So the ratio of the spending of US:UK = 6.
